Hi..new to this forum. I have always wanted to take on an ROV build but most were complicated due to not being familiar with the Raspberry Pi or Python. This project made it extremely easy. Costas has done all the hard work and made it easy for a novice like myself. Most of my project was DIY but I did buy the hacked dome, the ROV STL files and the SD card from the products Blue Dot ROV provides.
My build:
Printing - Artillery Sidewinder X1 - This ROV was the first thing I ever printed on this printer. Downloaded the STL files after my purchase, leveled the bed and hit print! Some of the STL objects will seem very large or very small in your slicer but are easily fixed by scaling up x10 or down by x10. Thanks Costas for helping me with this. I did have fitment issues with the cradle when trying to install the battery. I did not calibrate my printer and believe it was due to this and not the STL files. Also I did rotate some of the STL files in my slicer to optimize them for my printer and the support needed to print them properly.
Software - I downloaded the Raspberry Pi Imager from the link provided, then the ROV software from the link provided. During the ROV imaging processes the progress bar went past %100 and eventually completed the imaging process around %400. Then completed the verification process with no issues.
Hardware - I used the off-the-shelf list Costas provides with no issues. Some of the links might be broken due to supply chain limitations but was able to find them elsewhere on Amazon/Ebay. I did bench test all the hardware and software minus the motors before installing in the printed cradle. I could tell everything was working due to the video from the camera and the LEDs blinking on the motor control boards when using the app buttons.
The BlueDotROV App - The app is user friendly and worked well with my Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Tablet. I was not able to make the compass visible on the screen but it does flash up on screen for a second when I first turn on the app but disappears for some reason. If anyone knows why please let me know. I also need to complete the battery sensor install and do not have a voltage readout at this time.
Summary:
I highly recommend this project to the novice with a 3D printer or someone that wants to buy the kit from Blue Dot ROV. Costas does a great job walking you through the build with his YouTube videos and I was able to complete this project in a week. The cable management portion was the trickiest part when installing the electronics in the cradle but I make some mods to make it fit for me.
