Today I’m putting the finishing touches on our first batch of topside WiFi modules for the Model C underwater drones. We’re going to redo this one (pictured) because of some cosmetic adhesion issues, but it’s structurall everything we hoped! Its perfectly fits a GL.iNet mini router, and features a new snap-in hatch for access to the internal hardware (That took us quite a few tries to get right ;) ).
Take a look inside to get an idea the included hardware. Hopefully this helps seed some of your own ideas for upgrades!
Here’s the hand-painted topside WiFi module. We’re planning on fixing the roughness on the 3D printed text this week, so you get a perfect piece of hardware in your kit. Notice the snap-in black hatch, as well as the divot for your thumb for easy access to internal hardware.
The interior is pretty simple, and assembly only requires sliding in a few components. Friction holds the router module into place, and that gets powered by the included USB battery. There’s plenty of extra room in the bottom compartment though, so we’re excited to see what power block upgrades you come up with!
This is sweet!
It’s supposed to be at least 100 feet, but this sounds like a good experiment to try soon ;) I’m not sure if the housing will actually affect the range, but my expectation is that it won’t make too much of a difference. (My thinking is that the housing is only 3mm thick, and the wavelength of the signal from the 5GHz WiFi module is about 100cm)
It‘s worth noting I’ve never been able to get far enough from these modules to have any range problems while operating an ROV :)
What's the wifi range on this module?
